The Phoenix, a National Historic Landmark
The Phoenix Apartments, a National Historic Landmark, is the former headquarters of the Insurance Company of North America (INA), the oldest shareholder-owned insurance company in the nation. Prominent Philadelphia architects Stewardson and Page were commissioned to design INA's new headquarters on August 8, 1922. The architects adopted a Colonial style of architecture and presented the concept as the "Gateway to the Parkway," which was just beginning to take form.

Today, many of the building's unique historic features, including the main entry lobby and ornate bronze elevator lobbies, have been restored to their original condition. Special materials and detailing have also found new life, as in the Kasota marble walls and floors, Doric-columned alcoves and elaborate coffered ceilings. Exterior architectural details, such as granite Corinthian columns with 9-foot high carved granite eagles perched on globes (INA's corporate symbol), have also been fully restored and preserved.

The Phoenix underwent a major renovation in 2002. Every care was taken to preserve its architectural beauty while incorporating the latest of technologies and energy efficiency:

  • Insulated double pane operable windows
  • Comprehensive fire sprinkler system
  • State-of-the-art life safety system featuring a hard wire alarm with voice annunciation and offsite monitoring
  • Elevator cabs and electronics
  • Central trash chute system
  • Wiring for high speed internet and digital cable
  • Wireless internet in common areas
